Is Alef Model A the World’s First Real Flying Car? Know Claim, Price & Tesla Roadster Comparison

The Alef flying car is a fully electric, two-seat vehicle from California’s Alef Aeronautics that drives on public roads and takes off vertically like a drone. Alef calls it the world’s first real flying car and says it has been alone in the flying car race for eleven years. The Alef Model A is priced from about $299,999, offers roughly 110 miles of flight range and around 200 miles of road range, and holds an FAA Special Airworthiness Certificate for limited flight testing. Hand assembly began in December 2025, with early deliveries planned by late 2026. In October 2026, Alef logged its 1,000th flight and flew over a Tesla Roadster.

Why Everyone Is Talking About Alef Right Now

It was a good time. Tesla announced the long-anticipated Tesla Flying Car , Roadster on 15th October, 2026, at a SpaceX test site in Texas. The vehicle hopped from other cars using cold-gas thrusters and Elon Musk described it as a “car that could ‘fly like a rocket.’

At the same time, the automaker posted a video in its official series of “real ALEF” videos showing its Model A emerging from a grassy field and flying over four parked cars, including an older Tesla Roadster and Cybertruck. The firm stated it had made the 1,000th flight logged by the car. The message that it sent to Tesla was succinct and perhaps even sassy: Hello, Tesla, it’s been 11 years of the flying car race and you’re just now getting started.

The clip quickly went viral on social media. Most importantly, it started a genuine discussion as to the meaning of a “flying car.” Is it a hopping car or one that will jump and fly miles away from you on its own?

History of Alef Aeronautics

The history of Alef starts in 2015, when four engineers set out to build a car that could simply rise above traffic. Here are the key milestones:

YearMilestone
2015Jim Dukhovny, Constantine Kisly, Pavel Markin and Oleg Petrov found Alef in California
2016First sub-scale prototype built
2017Tim Draper’s Draper Associates invests $3 million in seed funding
2018First full-size “skeleton” prototype completed
2019Full-size prototype starts test driving and test flying
2022Company exits stealth mode and unveils the Model A
2023FAA grants a Special Airworthiness Certificate for limited flights
2024Pre-orders pass 2,850, then 3,300
2025First public video of the car driving and lifting off; hand assembly of the Model A Ultralight begins in December
20261,000th logged flight; early deliveries targeted by year-end

Tim Draper’s backing matters here. He was also an early investor in Tesla and SpaceX, which makes Alef’s playful jab at the Roadster even more interesting. In short, both companies share a common early believer.

What Makes Alef the “World’s First Real Flying Car”?

The car has earned the claim to be the first real flying car from the maker, Alef. The manufacturer, Alef, has debuted its car as the world’s first real flying car. That of course is a marketing statement. However, there are three definite advantages in the design when compared to most of its competitor,Tesla Roadster.

  • It is driven like a normal car- The Model A features four wheels equipped with small electric motors, and can be parked in a regular parking spot or garage. No need for a runway or a vertiport!
  • It takes off vertically- The electric propellers are mounted inside a mesh body and are hidden.Eight hidden electric propellers are mounted inside a mesh body. The consequence of this is that no rotor blades are exposed, making it safer and quieter.
  • It flies sideways- After lift-off, the whole body rotates and takes the form of a biplane wing. In the meantime, a gimbaled cabin maintains their level and up-right flying position. It’s an unusual maneuver; it’s what makes the car execute a forward cruise efficiently.

Here are the Model A specifications based on Alef’s published figures. Keep in mind that these are company claims, not independent test results.

SpecificationAlef Model A
Vehicle typeDrive-and-fly eVTOL (vertical take-off and landing)
Power100% battery electric
Seating1 pilot + 1 passenger
Flight propulsion8 propellers, 8 electric motors (Distributed Electric Propulsion)
Flight rangeAbout 110 miles (177 km)
Road rangeAbout 200–220 miles (322–354 km)
Road speedLimited to about 25 mph (low-speed vehicle category)
WeightUltralight class (around 850 lb)
BodyCarbon fibre composite with mesh shell
SafetyUp to eight layers of backup on key parts, obstacle detection, glide landing mode, full-vehicle ballistic parachute
Licence (US)Driver’s licence for the Ultralight version, according to Alef

The 25 mph road limit surprises many people. However, it makes sense. By registering the car as a low-speed vehicle, Alef avoids full highway crash certification for now. For longer trips, the plan is simple: fly over traffic instead of driving through it.

Alef Flying Car Price and How to Pre-Order

So, what is the Alef flying car price? The Model A starts at about $299,999 (roughly Rs. 2.46–2.5 crore) expected, according to the company’s reservation page. To join the queue, buyers pay a refundable deposit of $150 through the official website Alef Aeronautics. A larger “priority” deposit moves buyers higher in the line.

Alef says it has more than 3,500 pre-orders, worth around $1 billion on paper. Even so, a $150 deposit shows interest rather than a firm purchase. Real demand will become clear only when customers pay in full.

Quick pricing summary:

  • Model A: about $299,999 (expected)
  • Deposit: $150 (refundable), with a higher priority option
  • Model Z: target of about $35,000 by 2035

Alef Flying Car Tests and Video Highlights

Since 2019, full-size prototypes of Alef have been tested in the ground and flight since. There have been some over the years that are memorable.

The 2025 “First Drive and Take-Off” Video

Alef released a video of its ultralight Model Zero prototype in early 2025 driving a street, followed by a vertical lift off and flying over a parked car. The company said the video is the first of a vehicle driving and then coming up off the ground in the vertical direction. It took no time to become viral.

Testing Sites and Safety Checks

Alef has also got agreements to do flight testing at Half Moon Bay and Hollister airports, California. Furthermore, each handcrafted unit is checked out with its components and test flown before it is shipped out of the factory.

The October 2026 Alef Flying Car Video

The 1000th flight is recorded in the latest video of the Alef flying car (October 15, 2026). The car slowly and gradually moves upwards like a giant drone, then it crosses over a line of cars, including a Tesla Roadster. It will be available on the official YouTube channel of evinsighthub.

Alef vs Tesla Roadster: Which Is the Real Flying Car?

The two companies are going down vastly different paths. The new Tesla Roadster is the first road going electric hypercar that is available. It is available in three different forms: Thrust, Performance and Rocket. The Thrust and Rocket variants feature the addition of short-range, cold gas thrusters for blistering the rocket and quick turns while flying. With the Thrust option, Tesla has a 0 to 60 time of less than 2 seconds.

While the latter, Alef, constructed a slow road car that can really be flown for extended distances of time. So, Tesla constructed a sports car with a rocket and Alef constructed a small aircraft that can drive a car.

Interestingly, Alef’s CEO welcomed the competition. He argued that a big name like Tesla could pull in investors and push regulators to create clear rules for flying cars. That would help the whole industry, Alef included.

Production, Deliveries and Certification Status

In December 2025, the Model A Ultralight started to be hand assembled at Alef’s Silicon Valley plant. It takes several months to build and test each car. The first units will be delivered to as many as 10 early customers in California and Hong Kong, Alef says. Such buyers will be trained, and fly under strict conditions.

Production is anticipated to increase in the coming year, 2027. To get ready, Alef has already inked deals with aerospace suppliers which also supply parts for leading brands.

But with all that, there’s a catch. The FAA certificate that Alef received in 2023 is for limited experimental flying. It doesn’t allow unrestricted flights for the public. The biggest remaining obstacle is yet to be overcome – the approval of the vehicle as a road machine and as an aircraft.

Challenges Alef Still Faces

Before flying cars become a common sight, Alef needs to solve several problems:

  • Regulation: Clear rules for road-and-air vehicles don’t fully exist yet.
  • Battery limits: Flight drains batteries fast, which caps range and payload.
  • Cost: A $300,000 price keeps the Model A out of reach for most buyers.
  • Scale: Hand-building a few cars is very different from mass production.
  • Public trust: Many people still doubt that a car can stay roadworthy and airworthy at the same time.

Even so, 1,000 logged flights and a working production line are real progress, not just renders.

Alef Model Z : a future proposal

The Alef Model Z are still historical development goals. Alef had originally planned to introduce a 4-person sedan in 2035 with a price tag of $35,000, a flight range of over 300 miles and driving range of over 220 miles.

Other third-party sources refer to 2030 and other ranges. The disagreement is a reason why it is not appropriate to make a firm launch claim. The manufacturer’s original statement doesn’t necessarily mean the car will deliver on those numbers or schedule.

We’ll have to wait for a current, comprehensive specification and tests from Alef before we can move Model Z into the future-plans column. They should not let its proposed price sway their purchase decision concerning today’s Model A reservation.

Alef Model Z Specifications

The Model Z is Alef’s long-term vision for a mass-market flying car. It’s still a concept, so treat these numbers as targets.

SpecificationAlef Model Z (planned)
Body styleFour-seat sedan
Target launch2035
Target priceAbout $35,000
Flight rangeAbout 200 miles
Road rangeAbout 400 miles
Extra featurePlanned autonomous flight

If Alef hits that price, a flying car would cost about as much as a regular EV today. That’s a huge “if”, but it shows where the company wants to go.

Conclusion

The Alef flying car isn’t Sci-Fi anymore. It drives, it flies off the ground vertically and it has flown over 1,000 times already. While Tesla’s thruster-powered Roadster made headlines this month, it was Alef who made everyone else take off. There is still a long way to full certification, and a high cost. But, if the first customer deliveries are met in 2026, then it will be the year when the flying car finally gets off the drawing board.
